The Help by Kathryn Stockett

Kathryn Stockett’s debut novel, The Help, is told from the perspective of three very strong, yet completely different women: Eugenia (Skeeter), Aibileen and Minny. Set in Jackson, Mississippi in 1962, these women, without knowing it, change not only their own lives but the lives of those around them. Skeeter is a young white woman who had just graduated from college and wants nothing more than to be a writer. Aibileen is a colored maid for one of Skeeter’s friends, Mrs. Leefolt. Minny is Aibileen’s best friend who is also a colored maid, although her employment record is less consistent, due to her having trouble not saying what is on her mind.

Jackson seems to be immune to the beginning of the civil rights movement and there is little, if any, respect for the colored help of the white families. When Skeeter approaches Aibileen asking her if she wishes that things were different, Aibileen doesn’t know what to say so she just pretends she’s happy with the way things are. Happy with how she is treated by her employer, Mrs. Leefolt. Happy that thanks to Hilly Holbrook, she will now have to use a  bathroom separate from the rest of the family in the garage. Happy with the fact that one day the little girl she is raising will Continue reading

Three Best Friends Fabulous Day by Mary Ting

I was given the opportunity to review Three Best Friends Fabulous Day. The author, Mary Ting, is an elementary school teacher and a mother who was inspired by her own daughter’s friendships to write this chapter book for children.

The stories in this book are based on the real life events of three best friends as they are learning about issues such as friendship, health and the interests of young girls. Three Bests Friends is written from a second grader’s point of view and has short, easy to read chapters that I believe a child would find entertaining.

Each chapter is a different scene during the day that gives an inside look into how the average second grade girl may interact with her friends. Kaitlin, Charisse and Kaylie are three best friends who are learning from one another constantly and make you want to observe the conversations of young children more.

While the grammar isn’t perfect in this book, I don’t believe that takes away from the value of the stories at all. I found the book to be adorable and plan on giving it to my niece, who just happens to be a second grader. I’m sure she’ll enjoy it and I love the subtle learning lessons she can get from reading it.

Three Best Friends Fabulous Day gets 3.5 stars.

Mary Ting is an aspiring author and if you would like to hear more about this book or would like to contact her, she has a Facebook page for Three Best Friends and you can purchase the book HERE.

Beautiful Creatures by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl

Ethan Wate hated the small mindedness of his small town. He hated that he had lost his mother to a fatal car accident and that his father had retreated into himself since. He hated the dreams he kept having of the girl he had never met but felt like he had to save.

Ethan had no idea just how far he would go to save that girl when she came into his life like the hurricane she is. He does everything he can to protect Lena from what will come on her sixteenth birthday but will it be enough?

The supernatural takes on a whole new personality in Beautiful Creatures. Light or Dark.  What will Lena choose?

I give Beautiful Creatures 4 out of 5 stars. I really enjoyed it and am looking forward to book two, Beautiful Darkness, due out October 26, 2010.

Check out the official Beautiful Creatures website for more information on this great book

If I Stay by Gayle Forman

What if you have everything you could want as a seventeen-year-old but then lose it all in a matter of seconds. Your mom. Your dad. Your baby brother. Gone. And you are left to watch the wreckage as your own life hangs in the balance.

Mia is that seventeen-year-old girl. One minute she was riding down a snowy road in Oregon with her family and next she was watching as the paramedics arrive in an attempt to save her life.

The thought of going on in life without her family seem unbearable to Mia. How could she possibly leave them behind?

Will the love of Mia’s remaining family and friends be enough to make Mia stay? What would you choose?

This is absolutely one of my favorite books of the year so far. I could not put this book down. Gayle Forman tells a beautiful and painful story that will have you not only hoping for Mia to survive but also mourning the loss of her family.

If I Stay gets 5 stars without a doubt!
