I saw this the other day in the store, and it looked good. Well, it is good. We are taken back to the 1860’s, a time when the Southern states felt their way of life was the right way. N.C. Allen centers the story around two main families, as well as a few extra people. One family lives in the north and the other in the south. She brings into light the civil war through both sides. You really see the “brother fighting brother” and other issues that came up during this time. Women’s rights, immigrants that felt in their hearts that they were americans, americans seeing the immigrants as less than themselves.
She doesn’t leave out the bloody details, you read about men dying, and their wounds. For anyone who loves history, or even just wanting something a bit different this is a good read. I give it 4.5 out of 5 stars.
