Dear John – Nicholas Sparks

Wow, I am liking Nicholas Sparks more and more.  In Dear John, a young man (John) wants more out of life than his usual day to day activites.  He ends up following after what his dad recomended and joined the army.  When he was half way through his time, on leave he meets a girl.  She has shown him so much.  They promise to write to each other often.

A year later, he comes and meets her folk.  They promise that when he is out of the serivce, they’ll get married.  Then September 11 happens.  He signs up for two more years, and she’s left with a broken heart.  Will love conquer all?  Find out!

I give this 4.5 stars.  I will be reading this more, maybe not when my own man is deployed.

Beautiful Creatures by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl

Ethan Wate hated the small mindedness of his small town. He hated that he had lost his mother to a fatal car accident and that his father had retreated into himself since. He hated the dreams he kept having of the girl he had never met but felt like he had to save.

Ethan had no idea just how far he would go to save that girl when she came into his life like the hurricane she is. He does everything he can to protect Lena from what will come on her sixteenth birthday but will it be enough?

The supernatural takes on a whole new personality in Beautiful Creatures. Light or Dark.  What will Lena choose?

I give Beautiful Creatures 4 out of 5 stars. I really enjoyed it and am looking forward to book two, Beautiful Darkness, due out October 26, 2010.

Check out the official Beautiful Creatures website for more information on this great book

If I Stay by Gayle Forman

What if you have everything you could want as a seventeen-year-old but then lose it all in a matter of seconds. Your mom. Your dad. Your baby brother. Gone. And you are left to watch the wreckage as your own life hangs in the balance.

Mia is that seventeen-year-old girl. One minute she was riding down a snowy road in Oregon with her family and next she was watching as the paramedics arrive in an attempt to save her life.

The thought of going on in life without her family seem unbearable to Mia. How could she possibly leave them behind?

Will the love of Mia’s remaining family and friends be enough to make Mia stay? What would you choose?

This is absolutely one of my favorite books of the year so far. I could not put this book down. Gayle Forman tells a beautiful and painful story that will have you not only hoping for Mia to survive but also mourning the loss of her family.

If I Stay gets 5 stars without a doubt!

Wings by Aprilynne Pike

Laurel was just a normal teenage girl. Well, normal in the homeschooled, vegan, supermodel beautiful kind of way. When her parents moved to Crescent City, Laurel thought the biggest change in her life was going to be attending public school for the first time in her life. For a while that was true. Until she sprouted a flower from her back. A flower that looked very much like wings.

She chose to tell only David, the boy she had become so close to in school. He was her rock and they were perilously close to becoming much more than friends when she met Tamani.

Tamani was alluring, beautiful, calming and had a way of never really leaving Laurel’s thoughts. He was also a faerie – just like Laurel. Laurel couldn’t deny how easy it felt to be around Tamani and when she was with him the rest of the world faded away.

Laurel is given the task of keeping her mom’s property from being sold and that proves much more difficult than she had imagined. After Laurel’s father suddenly becomes deathly ill, Laurel’s mom decides there is no other option but to sell the property so Laurel and David set out to investigate the man who is attempting to buy it. This brings them to their own near death experience and soon they learn that faeries aren’t the only mythical creatures out there.

Generally, I don’t find myself to be a fan of books about faeries and was hesitant to read Wings when I found out it was about them. I must say though, I am very happy that I did decide to read it. Wings gets 4 out of 5 stars and leaves me very excited to read Spells.
